on march 6 /68 during a big fire fight with dug in nva late that evening the n.v.a started retreving back into the dmz.I spotted a 30 caliber machine about 35 yds. out in front of our lines,I ask for covering fire while I crawled out to get it.When i got to their trenches there was a wounded nva lieing face down with his hand trying to get a chicom off his back pack.I shot him with a .45 pistol that I picked upn my way there. At this point cpl Lee and cpl Hall could not see me so they came up to check on me.When they got there they ask are you ok.I said yes and started out the bunker with the machine gun, when a nva came out the next bunker and sprayed the area with an AK47 killing both Lee and Hall, then turned and ran back into the bunker. Then I took the enemy machine gun back to our lines and laied down a base of fire with it while Lt.Kenerly and others went up and got thrir bodies. Then the words came down to start moving the dead and wounded back to the LZ.When we got back there we found out we were still missing some bodies, then I think it was Col.Marsh ask for volunteers to go back.So I threw the enemy machine gun on the medvac chopper and volunteered to go back and look for them with ColMarsh and two orthers. We found the bodies and got back to the LZ.It was a terible day, lost a lot of good buddies that day.Are any of you guys still around that came over and fired the enemy machine gun?Wish I could get a picture of it but never saw it again after I put it on the chopper.SIMPER FI Bobby

My name is Mia Kobos Cyr and I'm looking for anyone who may have known my Dad, Michael J. Kobos originally from CT. He was an FMF Corpsman with Mike Company 3rdb/3rd marines maybe. i'm not quite sure if it's 3b/9th or 3b/3rd. What I do know from my Dad stories (and how proud he was to tell them) his nickname was "Doc Herb" and his squad called themselves the "Free Love Squad". I know that he took place in Operation Dewey Canyon in 2/68 and because of his efforts, he received a Bronze Star-V that he cherished to his dying breath. I'm not quite sure if there's anyone there that may know him, but if there is, please contact me. My brother and I are putting together a tribute to my father and all his fellow Corpsman who served. It would mean so much to me, my brother, and my Mom, who served in the Navy and met my Dad at Corps school back in '66. Thank you.

Gary L. Washburn Thursday, 12/25/08, 2:24 PM

Hi: My name is Gary Washburn and Bob, my kid brother, was known as Peabody in the 3/3. I was a senior in Army Quartermaster OCS when Dad told me that Bob joined the Marines in May, 1967. I told my Dad, a minister, that Bob could die in Vietnam -- it was getting ugly by 67-68. He was the most unlikely Marine I've ever known but he served proudly and was killed on August 27, 1968. He was very proud of the Corps and his service and told me that the Marines could kick the Army butt anytime and anywhere. He was known as Peabody because he wore big thick black glass frames and was an 'intellectual' of sorts. I escorted him home from Treasuer Island, San Francisco and we buried him in September, 1968 on what would have been his 21st birthday. When I returned to the Atlanta Army Depot I was asked to service as a Notification Officer for families in the Southeast. I declined. It was tough duty and the guys who served drew straws to see who would knock on the door. As soon as a family member answered the door, they knew why we were there. If any of you served with my brother Lance Corporal Bob Washburn, I would appreciate hearing from you. Bob's sergeant Vernon Randall called me last Christmas and it was a wonderful present to hear from someone who served with Peabody. Thank you for your service -- Marines Rock! John J. (Jerry) Henrichs Tuesday, 10/7/08, 7:47 PM

Hi Guys! I've always gone by Jerry Henrichs. I served with H&S Co., Supply, MOS 3041, from November of 1967 thru November of 1969 when I was sent stateside with the 3/3/3 Cadre. I don't remember the date I became a Sergeant but I do know that I was 19 years old when it happened. I extended my Vietnam tour three times for several reasons. #1) I was the "trader" for the Battalion. I knew supply people in most of the other units when we were in Dong Ha, Da Nang and Quang Tri including Air Wing and Navy units. When our guys needed something that was in short supply through the supply system I would locate what we needed at another unit, find out what that unit needed in "barter" to trade with them. If we didn't have anything in excess that they needed, I would keep trading with other units (sometimes three or four) until I had what they needed so our guys could get what we needed in the first place. I became pretty good at it and didn't want our guys to lose a resource. By the way, one thing that helped a great deal is if we had any NVA gear to trade. I could get almost anything we needed with some of their web gear, canteens, belts, etc. #2) I didn't want to leave one of the best Battalions in the United States Marine Corps. I wanted to stay where I could accomplish/contribute the most for all the guys in India, Kilo, Lima, and Mike that were in the field at the point of the spear, living, dying, getting wounded, heatstroke, always cold, wet, dirty, scared, frustrated, and pissed off but getting the job done that we were there to do in the finest traditions of the Corps. #3) Those three free thirty day leaves (plus travel time) were pretty nice. I couldn't afford to go (and stay) anywhere in the free world except home but home was the best destination anyway. #4) I was determined to limit my stateside duty as much as possible. Keeping my boots spitshined and my utilities starched all the time didn't appeal very much to me. I didn't want to deal with all the petty bullshit that goes along with stateside duty. Doc was there for me in July 11, 1965 in Chu Lai when I was wounded, and this was the first time I have seen him since. It has been 43 years over due. It was great to see him. God Bless. Also went to Oregon to see Chuck Eller. He was in M- 3/3 with me and Doc. Was also great to see him. Had a good visit with him and his wife also. God Bless.

I was a dog handler (dog's name was Tiger) assigned to 3/3 at Camp Carroll in Oct and Nov. 1968. I do not remember much of those two months other than helping to guard the Kha (sp.) Gia bridge and going out on patrol. I am uncertain as to the 3/3 unit (s) I was with. My dog was unmistakable since he was the only tail-less (only ca. 2 inches left) german shepherd in the marine corps. Would like to hear from anyone who I may have served with during that TDY.

Doc Hoppy did a wonderful job. I have been trying to locate a Marine who was medevaced August 26th-27th '67 from Phu Loc area to Phu Bai. It was an ambush and we had marines medevaced once then later that night he was hit and was the only one put on the chopper. His last name was Reddy and I was hoping Doc Hoppy can steer me in the direction to find Reddy. Wish I knew his first name but don't. Thanks for any help anyone out there can give me. I was stationed with the 3rd Marines, 1st Radio Battalion, China Beach VietNam, June 1968 to July 1969, located at 5Th Communication Battalion base near Marble Mtn, end of the runway of 3rd MAF. I would be interested in hearing from any old buddies that remember me. I would like to hear from Bob McCarthy of Boston who was stationed with me and others. Memories of long ago are still very vivid. Much has changed, here and there, I my only hope and prayer is that what we did was not in vain. I believe that God is in charge of everything, and that His plan always works for good to those who love him.

Yesterday seemed like a new day in my life when I made contact with John Mick. All of this comes from still trying to cope with making it back from Nam a little briused and banged up like the rest of you guys. For those that rember and where woundering what became of me? I medically discharged in May of 69. Went back in (Navy as a Gunnersmate) with a medical waiver in 1975 thought we would be going back in. Got out of the Navy in 1979. Same year 1979 joined the Army (can you beleive that I've always hated squids and doggies). I served with 1st Ranger Bn. after Airborne school from 1979-1981 and then join Special Forces 1st and 3rd Bn's of 7 Group (A) RETIREING in Dec of 1992. The times with Mike 3/3 are always and will always remain with me. Miss the good times. So for all those that did not know what happened to me there it is in breif. Mike company marines, I went to Phil, PA. My wife had a medical seminar in Philly, so I went along and looked around. I was really impressed with the history of the town. I rented a vehicle and drove down to Lancaster, PA and visited with Mike Co's weapons plt. NCO Norman Buck. I thanked him for coming up and getting me out of a really tight spot under the NVA"s guns on March 6, 1968. I told his daughter Abby that to me she had about the bravest guy for a dad any one could ever have. Thanks to Buck, I was medivaced out on a gunship that day and taken to Japan and finally Navel Hosp. in SD Ca. 3 wks later I got to hold my little girl who was born 6 days after we got ambushed. So to Buck and the other marines who got me on that lone gunship that frighful day - Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I try not to take any day lightly and I try to find someone to help. Though not too many marines here, I try to help all those I can. It blesses me more than them and I get a waarm feeling. So guys, though your not here in body, your here with me in spirit. May be mike company will be alive as long as one of us is. Thks. TEX M. Co. 33 67-68

Hey Sam. Hope you're doing well. I remember how badly I felt when I loaded your mangled body on that 46. I never though you'd make it. And I remember how happy I was to see you alive and kicking at the Melbourne reunion John Mick put on. We shared a lot of tough experiences in 68, all of us. We'll be brothers till we assume post on Heaven's scene. I have to correct you on March 6th, however, a day that will live in infamy in M 3/3 history. I wasn't there. I was at Gio Linh standing light radio watch duty because of a FUO. Mike's 1-4 radio operator that day was Bob Garrett, I believe. I've heard about that day many times. It was the worst of the worst. I'm glad I wasn't there and I feel guilty because I feel that way. God bless all of you that went through it, especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow Marines. Hello to my "MAD MIKE" Marines! As many of you know, it was 40 years ago today that Mike Company walked into that Bloody Ambush outside of Alpha 3, that killed and wounded so many of our Brothers. 40 years is a lifetime, but I can still see it in my mind like it happened yesterday! LT Miller propped up against a tree wounded, John Mick firing a captured NVA Machinegun back at the Gooks, T.J.Kelly calling in Med-o-vacs, Col. Marsh carrying KIA's and WIA's in strechers to the landing zone, myself crawling down the hill to the point of first contact and getting out dead and wounded. May you "REST IN PEACE" my brothers, you will never be forgotten!

May 27,68 D-6 met with M-6 for our opcon assignment to 3/3. We hooked up to the West of Mike Co to form a cordon at Ky Truc. When the Captains were done talking I asked Mike 6 if Alan Winter was still with Mike. M6 op let me say hi to Cpl Winter. We both arrived in country together..were together from plt 383 at San Diego all the way to Nam. Seperated at receiving. Later in the day Delta hit the crap heavy with the NVA. We walked right into them. If you have Al's e-mail send it to me or let him know "Stone says Hi." 3/3 Mike is a good outfit. Semper Fi

Was just reading John Mick's entry re: March 6, 1968. You're correct, my friend....that was a day! I don't envy the current Marines of 3/3. But, I can love them, pray for them and keep them in my mind. And for all those we left behind...Sentry duty on Heaven's scenes for all is.... Peace and quiet, because some great Marines are standing guard tonight! Semper Fi, Lee

I was a radio operator with the 11th Engr's and was assigned to Ca Lu during the time the company was there and at the Rockpile. Also was at Con Thien on May 8th when we lost 44 and had about 150 wounded. Transfered to 3rd Motor T sometime in late 67, don't remember exactly when. Just now starting to get involved in contacting anyone that was in the same area and operations during 66/67. Landed by ship in Nov 66 at Dong Ha (LCU up the Cua Viet) Even though I was not assigned to 3/3 or the other units (1/4, 2/9, 3/26 etc.) that I met up with I think we still share a lot in common. Facing an intelligence delimma, since I was AmTracs and attached to many different Grunt units(seldom knowing who I was with), I'm hoping someone here can fill in sum blanks. Did time at Namo Bridge in '66...May I believe, or late April...then down towards DaNang off a road headed west from hiway one. I remember Grunts being mounted out on Chinooks around June/July...a shitload of them. Had two clubs in Bn Area...one was more of a tent(all Hamms beer!) and close by sickbay and the road. Moved south to HoiAn in August I believe, joined up with 1/1...did a float to Oki November till end of Dec., then back to 1/1.... YAT-YAS

I swear, Doc Hoppy made me come over and take a look around. He said if I didn't he would talk to the Corpsmen of Delta 1/4 and my shot card would be lost. We Gunfighters do love our Corpsmen and believe what they tell us, don't we! I will stroll through your AO, with your permission of course, and I know I will enjoy myself. hey doc,i'm still kicking: I've often wondered what happened to the guy's after i left. the only one that kept in touch for a while was my old buddy, john copeland. the knife you used to cut my boot off with must have been the dullest knife in country, because that was some kinda hurt. i didn't mind once the morphine kicked in, i got even higher after i was loaded on that chopper. i think that "coker" is kicking it up top and watching out for all of us. god bless.

Thankyou all and esp Odee for keeping the site going- thankyou for a great time at the reunion. I wrote this to a friend of mine that is really unsure if he should attend a reunion.I find sometimes for me to write I can express myself much better. I thought I would share it with you and maybe if you havent attended you might consider it. Reunion 3/3 2004 I remember 1999 like it was yesterday but than again I remember 1968 like it was yesterday. I attended my first reunion in 1999 at a place called Ocean City New Jersey. I remember as the time drew close how nervous I was. My Heart was hard and my flesh was cold I was a Walking dead man. I wasn¿t at all sure this would be for me. As it turned out it was one of the best decisions of my life. At this reunion there were really just a handful of Marines. I would say not many more than 40. Most of the guys that attended were Marines I hadn¿t seen for many years. My 2nd Reunion was in Springfield, Illinois that reunion saw an increase of about 30 more Marines. This was just our Company. The 3rd reunion I attended was in 2004 it was held in Washington, DC. Over 500 Marines and guest attended this reunion all from our Battalion that served in Vietnam. When I entered our gathering room there were already over 100 people talking and laughing. I must tell you how small I felt among so many giants. Even though I was walking among many heroes I never once felt Small. There was never any judging or pretense among these heroes. I guess maybe that¿s the way real heroes act. The generals and privates all acted the same how strange it was to be among men that still call themselves United States Marines. I recall talking to many of these Marines all I had to do was stick out my hand. I felt as if I was walking among an elite group of men and indeed I was. I have learned many things by attending these reunions. The most important thing I have learned is what a true Marine is. More importantly what a true man is. I learned about forgiveness and love. I learned a true man is not measured by how he has fought or served his country but how he has loved and been able to forgive. Whenever I leave a reunion I can¿t help but cry. The tears are tears of feeling accepted in a way I have never felt before. Emotions I haven¿t had for a very long time. I have changed for the better in the last few years and have feelings that have been dead for a very long time. I thank you my fellow Marines I have finally come to realize what Vietnam was all about. If I had never experienced the pain I could never have had experienced the healing. Now when I sit alone and ponder I think less about Vietnam and more about the friends I have. Those friends called Marines and Corpsman, those friends that have blessed me with true meaning in life. Courage and true Love

Gentlemen from 3/3 reunion my wife does not know Im doing this but she volunterred to bartend one of the nights at the reunion so the guys behind the bar could go be with people they havent seen. Lo and behold we dont know if when she tried to pick up a case of beer to put in the sink to get cold her back went out. She went to the banquet and had to go back to the room. Since it was Saturday night I had to see my friends before I left Sunday morning. Anyone who drove the PA turnpike knows what she went through. Tues. Emergency room, Sunday Emergency room, Wed. Mri. Thurs. Pain management. And thats where we stand today. If anyone could thank her for what she did it would be appreciated. Sorry I couldnt be there Sunday morning but I will see you all in Colorado. Top O' the season to one and all! The reunion booklets are completed and will be mailed 12/29/03! Get your reservation forms in ASAP to AFR, and reserve a Hotel room (they are limited). All events are optional, so pick the ones you want. The "fees" for the events are almost all transportation costs to get us there and back, we did our best to keep it minimal. The reunion dues cover AFR costs, the hospitality room, incidentals, and a base for next reunions notifications. The PX form has the "gear" for the reunion, and is top notch! There will be only an inventory sampling at the reunion, so please order your shirts and/or hats in advance. With the numbers expected at the reunion, an onsite inventory is prohibitive... thus the advance order system. Hope to see everyone of you in DC... it's gonna be the best one yet! Doc Hoppy

talked to doc a short time ago, but lost all info on getting back in touch 618 692 6265...618 514 2871. I had to let go, some time back. But just hearing doc on the land line after all this time, brought back memories that havent occupied space in my mind for quite some time. Its really a scarey place for me, but I can honestly say that you are all truley my brothers and its good to be back, with you. Semper Fi

I am saddened to learn (from your site) that General Ray Davis has passed away. He lived here in Georgia and I was pleased to see him a number of times at Marine Corps Logistics Base, here in Albany, Georgia. I served twice under the General: 1956 when he was the Assistant Division Commander, 3rd Marine Division on Okinawa when he sported one star; then of course in 1968 when he commanded the same Division with 2 stars. I was also still on Active Duty when he was advanced to Assistant Commandant with four stars. General Davis truly was among the greatest of Marines. He was well-loved and admired by Marines, Retired Marines, and former Marines all, over the world. He will be greatly missed by them all. Lee.

Looking for Marines or family who knew boot camp buddy Cpl. Robert Schley KIA April 30, 1967 on Hill 881S while with M/3/3 as a machine gunner. I was on this hill with M/3/9 and found his body. Would appreciate knowing more about him - about his actions that caused him to be awarded the Navy Cross or other happier times, etc. God Bless You, Semper Fi Rick Johnson
