The President of the United States takes great pleasure in awarding the

BRONZE STAR MEDAL (V) to

CORPORAL PETER A. TRAMONTE

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

"For heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the
Republic of Vietnam while servving as a Squad Leader with Company M, Third Battalion,
Third Marines, Third Marine Division. On 17 June 1969, Company M assaulted a North
Vietnamese bunker complex in the Dong Ha area and encountered intense hostile small arms
fire from the defenders. Observing two Marine casualties lying in a position dangerously
exposed to enemy fire, Corporal Tramonte unhesitatingly left his covered position and fearlessly
maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to aid his wounded comrades. With complete disregard
for his own safety, he rendered medical treatment to one Marine while in an open rice paddy,
then moved the man to relative safey. Boldly returning to the hazardous area, he treated the
second casualty and also evauated him. Returning to the fire fight, he ably directed the fire
of his sqad members against the hostile soldiers until the Marines were ordered to withdraw.
During the withdrawal, he again exposed himself to a heavy volume of enemy fire to retrieve a
mortally wounded comrade from the dangerous area. His heroic and timely actions inspired
all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of two injured Marines.
Corporal Tramonte's courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of
great personal danger were in keeping with the highest traditions fo the Marine Corps and
of the United States Naval Service."

The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.
