The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the

SILVER STAR MEDAL

Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class Marvin Leon Berry

United States Navy

For service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

"The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Marvin Leon Berry, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, THIRD Marine Division. On 18 November 1943, a group of Marines with which Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Berry was serving as Pharmacist's Mate was subjected to a heavy and continuous barrage of enemy artillery and 90-mm. mortars. The group was ordered to quit the area and advance to a position of safety. Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Berry refused to leave but remained with and treated the nineteen wounded men who were within the area. Although the artillery barrage was not lifted until he reached a place of comparative safety, he did not once take cover, or give a thought to his danger. On 24 November Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Berry went forward to our lines and administered treatment and evacuated seven Marines of a combat patrol who had been wounded by the fire of emplaced Japanese machine guns. During this action, he was continuously subjected to enemy machine gun fire from the same positions, but though repeatedly advised to remain in a position of safety until the enemy positions could be reduced, he refused to be deterred from his purpose. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. "
