The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the

Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class Jacques A. Walthall

United States Navy

For service as set forth in the following

"The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Jacques A. Walthall, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Corpsman attached to 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division, in the battle of Piva Forks, Bougainville, on 24 November 1943. Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Walthall fearlessly advanced beyond the lines to assist men wounded in battle. Although seriously wounded himself, he crawled through 500 yards of swamp to procure medical aid for his wounded comrades.  His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service."
